AN - Sample Opening - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Tobe Hooper, 1974)
Budget: $80k
US Box Office: $30m
UK Box Office: Non Given

  • Time period anchored with text at the beginning
  • Non-diagetic sound in background, nothing on the screen just black, narrative enigma
  • Flash of decomposed hand, half a second on the screen
  • Flash of decomposed face
  • Flash of decomposed feet
  • Signifies CSI (the flashes) so something has happened to the bodies the police want to find out about
  • Flash of decomposed head
  • The music adds tension
  • Flash of hands again
  • Flash of teeth and then decomposed face
Techniques we can take from the opening:

  • We could anchor our time period like this film at the start of ours and maybe anchor a location to give the audience more information on it.
