SP - Sample Opening - Madhouse

Madhouse (William Butler, 2004)
Budget: $3m
Remake of the 1974 film

  • Lots of narrative enigma (no dialogue is used in the first sequence)
  • Variety of different shots including lots of cut shots
  • Begins with a panning shot
  • Blue tint is used to signify loneliness, or cold
  • Blood dripping foreshadowing something happening later on in the film
  • Curtains blowing in the background
  • Could be a hospital or an asylum (polysemic)
  • Narrative enigma of the baby drowning
  • Ends with a cut shot to a drawing
